ENGLISH VINEYARDS

The Wines

Our 2013 Rose, awarded the prestigious Protected Designation of Origin status, is made from red Rondo and white Reichensteiner grapes. A deep pink and raspberry blush in appearance, it is both fresh and dry in character with an attractive residual sweetness. Aromas and flavours of red summer fruits are followed by a delicate hint of butterscotch on the palate. Rondo, the main component, is a dark ruby red grape. It is an early ripening and high yielding variety which makes an excellent rose with good body and a defined character.
A delicious wine for summer drinking and best enjoyed lightly chilled. We would recommend to drink within three years of vintage. A top Silver Medal winner at the 2014 EAVA competition.

Our 2013 Bacchus is a white wine with an off-dry style. It has been awarded Protected Designation of Origin status and is made from the Bacchus grape blended with a small amount Reichensteiner. A subtle lemon colour in appearance, it is refined and light-bodied in character. Floral aromas of elderflower and apple blossom are followed by delicate citrus on the palate. A top Silver medal winner at the EAVA 2014 competition.

The East Anglian region is recognised for growing superb Bacchus grapes. It is an increasingly respected variety with a quintessentially English flavour, often compared with Sauvignon Blanc and floral Muscadet.

Our 2012 ‘Hannant’ Rose, a delicious blend of red Rondo and white Reichensteiner grapes achieved Protected Designation of Origin status and won the prestigious ‘2012 East of England Cants Trophy for Best Rose’. We have a very limited stock of this award winner left for sale…makingOur still wines are made at the Shawsgate Winery, Framlingham, Suffolk by the well respected wine maker, Rob Capp.

Our sparking wines, a white and a rose, are expected to go on sale in June 2015. They are currently undergoing secondary fermentation in bottle at Wiston Winery, West Sussex, under the guidance of Dermot Sugrue, formerly of Nyetimber.

A blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Reichensteiner make up our first white sparking wine.
Our first sparkling Rose is a blend of the classic Pinot Noir, Reichensteiner and an exciting new variety, Cabernet Cortis.
We are eagerly anticipating their return!

The Vineyard

We selected the site for Humbleyard Vineyard because we had grown excellent early ripening soft fruit on these south facing slopes over the past 35 years. Warm, well drained and largely protected from frost, it has proved to be the ideal location for the vines.

Our first vines were planted in2010, with further plantings in 2011 and 2012. We now have 9 varieties of equal quantity, totalling about 10,000 vines, covering 8 acres. Each variety flowers and ripens at different times of the summer and autumn which reduces the risk of crop loss due to bad weather. As the timing of the grape harvest is very precise, determined by the sugar and acid levels of the grapes, it also helps that they are not all ripe at the same time!

The grape varieties grown are both white and red, some well-known and some newly selected clones. They have been chosen to make a range of white and rose still and sparkling wines. We aim to have a selection of blended and single varietal wines ranging from medium dry to off-dry styles.

The white varieties are Solaris, Chardonnay, Reichensteiner, Sauvignon Blanc and Bacchus.
The red varieties are Rondo, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Cortis.

The management of the vineyard throughout the season is very labour intensive. Our vines are grown on a ‘double-guyot’ system, pruned back to two canes and tied down to the trellis over the winter months. This creates an upwardly trained canopy throughout the summer, which needs tying in, whilst excess leaves and shoots are removed by hand. With careful management to avoid various fungal and insect threats, we reap the reward when the grapes achieve the perfect balance of sugars and acidity. Harvest time in September and October is accompanied by daily picnics and much wine, in true continental style!

Why I recommend these wines:
We had invited some of our friends to dinner and I wanted to buy an interesting white wine as one of our guests was a international wine taster. So it had to be good and go with the meat that I was cooking for them and the meat was a shoulder of roast lamb.
As I had bought produce from their farm shop and I had just seen they had some white and rose wines there, I thought it would be nice to have the white wine from them. As it happened the white wine had a silver award so I bought two bottles.
It was SUPER and was immensely appreciated by everyone.
